Wrench Rooster
I grew up on a farm near Treynor, Iowa. While I love farming, I also love art and finding ways to incorporate farm themes into my work. From my earliest age, I have always loved to create and build things from junk, metal, boxes or anything I can find.
I create art because I love working with my hands and inventing things from my imagination that I can share with the world. I like the freedom of art and how there are endless possibilities as to what I can make.
I look at many images or things that exist in the world that I find interesting, and I make my own interpretations of what I see or combine aspects from several things to make something new. I sometimes think of ideas when I happen to see interesting shapes, and I think about which shapes will work well together. I also try to visualize ideas that include themes I’m interested in, such as anything farm-related, mechanical, industrial, run-down, or rustic, and I will draw several variations to see what works the best. For example, I made a ceramic, old looking tractor carrying two ceramic bales on its hay forks and front loader, and the bales were also made to work as salt and pepper shakers.
My preferred mediums are sculpture, metal working, wood working, and ceramics. I especially like to work with aged materials, metal junk, and vintage tools. Another example of my work is a piece called “Wrench Rooster” where I welded many old rusty metal tools and pieces together, including drill bits, wrenches, a chisel, and a horseshoe, into a free-standing structure.
Creating pieces that are a tribute to my farm background or which allow me to give new life to “old junk” are my passion.
